Cabinet Aides

All Kitchen and Bath cabinets come with the standard shelving and drawers, but there are many other aides available to help provide the most effective and organized use of cabinet space. By far the most common request for cabinet aides are Roll-Out shelves or drawers which are usually placed in base cabinets and pantries. Roll-Outs replace basic shelving and allow for easier access to all of your stored items as well as increasing the amount of storage space in each cabinet. They range in size from small roll-outs for spices to very wide roll-outs for pots and pans. Spice racks can be attached to the backside of doors or placed inside of drawers, cutlery dividers are also a common feature for drawers, and there are a variety of trash can roll-outs usually for under the sink. Trash can roll-outs can be installed in a single or double pail setup with a double pail set up often been used as a trash pail and a recycle bin. There are also pivot trash bins that attach to the back of a cabinet door and open when the cabinet door is opened.

The Problem with Rigid Thermo Foil

Over the years I have been asked many times, “How can I fix my Thermo Foil doors?” The most typical problem is peeling along the back edge of the doors and drawer fronts, but it is not the only problem people face with thermo foil. Melted edges of drawer fronts and doors that are next to the stove or cook top is a very common occurrence. Rigid Thermo Foil (RTF) doors do not handle heat very well. They are made with an MDF (medium density fiberboard) core, which when exposed to water acts like a sponge absorbing the water and compromising the core of the door or drawer front. However, the biggest issue that I commonly come across with RTF is the color change that occurs over time. This color change is most obvious in white RTF that tends to turn a creamy or yellowish color any time between seven and twelve years after the initial install. None of these problems are repairable, but there are other options available that can transform an RTF kitchen. Contact us at info@kitchendrs.com or 804-897-7982 to find out.

The Green Myth – Granite vs. Laminate

Many people are under the assumption that Granite countertops are a green product because they are natural (of the earth.) The truth is that although granite is natural it is not renewable. Once the granite is mined and cut it can never be replaced. I understand the attraction of granite and I like the look of it myself, but it is definitely not green.

Laminate countertops, on the other hand, are made with a wood substrate and the laminate itself is actually made from highly compressed paper. Wood is, of course, renewable and therefore far more environmentally friendly than stone.

Reface or Replace?

I get asked this question more than any other question.  The answer depends on what you, as the homeowner, are trying to accomplish.  If you are looking to totally change the layout of your kitchen, then complete Kitchen Remodeling would be the best option where your kitchen is redesigned and all of your cabinets are replaced.  However, if you like the layout of your kitchen and you just want a fresh or updated look, then complete Cabinet Refacing is the way to go.

Within the scope of a Reface it is possible and quite common to provide add-on cabinets and make some layout changes.  New countertops can be installed, and with a multitude of hardware options to choose from and all new molding including crown molding, your kitchen will be completely transformed.

The only other question to answer is if the condition of the existing cabinets is good enough to Reface.  Ironically, it is often the older cabinets that are most worthy of Refacing.  Old custom and semi-custom cabinets are usually well built structurally and make perfect candidates for a Reface.  Old drawer boxes and glide systems as well as old shelves can be replaced if needed.  We use ¾” natural finished maple for all new shelving.  Replacing shelves with roll-out drawers in base and pantry cabinets has become very popular.

Hopefully I have given you some understanding of the reasons why you would choose to Reface or Replace.  If you have any questions please feel free to email us.
